Bhubaneswar, July 2: The state government Thursday reduced the base fare by 1 paisa per km for ordinary and express buses and 2 paise for deluxe bus service under the newly-implemented automatic fare revision mechanism.
The move comes two days after oil firms announced a reduction in the price of diesel by 71 paise per litre with effect from Wednesday.
The revised bus fare is effective from Thursday, according to transport department officials.
The fare for ordinary buses has been reduced from 60 paise to 59 paise per km, while that of express buses has been cut from 63 paise to 62 paise, according to a notification issued by the commerce and transport department.
The fare in deluxe buses fare has been slashed from 84 paise to 82 paise and in AC deluxe buses from `1.05 to `1.03 per km.
This is the second time that bus fares in the state have been revised under the automatic fare revision mechanism that was implemented in June.
The state government had announced the implementation of the automatic mechanism for the revision of bus fares June 4, which was a long-standing demand of the All Orissa Private Bus Owners’ Association.
Under this mechanism, the fare for ordinary and express buses would be hiked by one paise per km with a `2 per litre hike in the price of diesel. The fare for deluxe and AC deluxe buses would be hiked by two paise per km for a `2 per litre hike in the price of diesel. A fall in the price of diesel would lead to a reduction in bus fares at a similar rate, according to the system.
