NOTA votes in Mayurbhanj worry political parties

Bhubaneswar:  Leaders of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were seen making serious efforts to reach out to voters in Patkura Assembly constituency on the last day of campaign Thursday. The constituency will go to polls Saturday.

While BJD chief Naveen Patnaik campaigned for party candidate Sabitri Agarwalla Wednesday, several ministers, party MLAs and MPs are camping in the constituency.

From the BJP side, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi, and other senior BJP leaders have campaigned for party candidate Bijoy Mohapatra.

For Congress candidate Jayanta Mohanty, state party unit chief Niranjan Patnaik and senior leader Narasingha Mishra have campaigned in the area.

Of the 10 candidates, one is woman and there are 2.44 lakh eligible voters in the constituency.

Around 1,700 polling personnel had been deployed to conduct the election, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar Thursday.

As per the Election Commission directions, indelible ink would be applied on the voters’ middle finger of the left hand, said Kumar. In case of re-polling at any booth, the ink would be applied on the ring finger, he said.

Voting in the seat in the Kendrapara district of Odisha was scheduled for April 29 but got postponed after BJD candidate Bed Prakash Agarwalla passed away. The voting was later postponed for 60 days due to cyclone Fani that hit the state May 3.
