Bhubaneswar, Jan 5: Rose lovers are in for a treat. Come December, they will be able to take in the beauty of 1,080 varieties of roses at the huge rose garden that the Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC), Bhubaneswar, plans to set up at Ekamra Kanan Botanical Garden.
The resource centre has decided to spend Rs 8 lakh for the establishment of the garden, which it believes would be the largest rose garden in eastern India.
At present, the park has 326 varieties of roses, including American Heritage, Arjun, Aswani, Bebilane, Bharatram, Black Granada, Black Lady, Carbarate, Careless Love, Double Delight, Dulhan, Alena, Ganga, Happiness, Indian Princes, Maharani, Paradise, and Seven star, planted over two acres of land.
The resource centre is in the process of adding 754 varieties of plants to make the rose garden the largest in eastern India.
“We have expanded the area of the garden from 2 acres to 4 acres for this purpose. We have already prepared beds on selected sites to plant new species of rose,” said senior RPRC scientist PC Panda.
“We have already ordered new plants from Bangalore and other nurseries from different parts of the country and these will reach the city in two-three days,” said Panda.
“The plantation of new rose plants will be completed by the end of January and by December 2015 people will find more than 1,000 species of roses in the garden. The roses will be available to the public for purchase by January 2016,” he said.
Visitors are greatly excited about the plan to set up a huge rose garden. “It is an achievement for the state that we are going to have the largest garden. I am looking forward to its execution,” said Naresh Hota.
