Bhubaneswar, Feb 13: The state government is going to set up a special cancer wing at Capital Hospital, health and family welfare minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak told the Assembly Friday.
In his reply to a question of Bhubaneswar (North) MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, Nayak said the decision to set up the wing would be implemented under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).
“The wing will be functional soon, and a doctor will be appointed as its nodal officer,” Nayak said.
Arrangements are being made to impart training to doctors and pathology technicians of the hospital to operate the wing. The wing would offer counselling, facilities for screening, FMC tests for breast cancer, cervical cancer and chemotherapy treatment along with other facilities, the minister said.
The state government will open cancer treatment centres in MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur and VSS Medical College and Hospital, Sambalpur as well.
The proposal to set up the cancer wings has been cleared and the government will spend `45 crore on each centre, Nayak said.
“The state government is committed to bettering the facilities for cancer patients’ treatment. Patients wouldn’t have to go outside the state as arrangements are being made to install required equipment at AHRCC, Cuttack to conduct all sorts of tests. The number of beds will also be increased. The budget estimation for this will be `120 crore,” the minister said.
