Capital to adopt enhanced municipal waste management

Bhubaneswar: A delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) visited Capital city Thursday as part of the Comprehensive Municipal Waste Management Project in Indian cities, under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 (SBM 2.0). Bhubaneswar has been selected along with Mumbai as one of the pilot cities for the initiative, which aims to enhance municipal solid waste management and strengthen the revenue models necessary for sustainable urban infrastructure development.

During the visit, the delegation met with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, along with senior officials and conducted field visits to assess the operations at the Transfer Station Site (TTS) and the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP). The visit focused on evaluating the current waste management practices and exploring ways to implement efficient, financially viable solutions under the proposed project framework.

ADB delegation members included urban development specialist Patrick Lavery, project analyst Lindy Lois M Gamolo, senior markets development advisory officer Priyanka Uberoi, senior markets development advisory specialist Yuki Inoue, investment officer Ankur Yadav, principal safeguard specialist Meenakshi Ajmer and project analyst Ankit Singhal. National Project Management Unit (NPMU) Consultant Rahul Singh and urban waste management expert Prashant Mohapatra attended as MoHUA delegation members.

The project is a step forward in building sustainable urban ecosystems and promoting public-private partnerships for better waste management infrastructure in India.
