CB to probe crop loan, insurance scam

Bhubaneswar: The state government has ordered a Crime Branch probe into an alleged farmers’ loan and crop insurance scam in Malkangiri district, said FSCW and Cooperation Minister Surya Narayan Patro Tuesday.

Patro, who himself admitted that the three officers facing charges of being involved in the scam have managed to get promotions, assured that appropriate action will be taken against the guilty after the investigation is over.

The minister said he has ordered an investigation by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of CB and has also issued suspension order against three officials. Besides, show-cause notices have also been issued to the officials responsible for the promotion of the accused officers, the minister added.

Allegations came to fore about large scale corruption in cooperative banks in four districts under Koraput Central Cooperative (KCC) Bank through fake transactions in the name of over 850 farmers.

Some bank officials had allegedly swindled over Rs 6 crore in the name of farmers’ loan and crop insurance schemes in parts of the district.
