Bhubaneswar, June 17: The state government has decided to equip around 400 OSRTC buses with CCTVs by July-end, stated transport minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi Friday, adding, “The tender process is in progress.”
“All private buses will also have to install CCTVs within three months and appropriate steps are being taken by the government in this regard,” Majhi said.
The government has been planning to equip all public carriages with Global Positioning System (GPS) to track their movements in view of growing crime and violence against women in the state, he said.
The state government had decided to ensure safety of women in all 15,000 private and 400 state-owned buses operating in the state in view of the 2012 Nirvaya incident.
Earlier, Majhi said two more clauses would be incorporated in the Orissa Motor Vehicle Rules, 1993. The first clause makes it mandatory for state carriages to install CCTV and GPS for obtaining road permits. CCTV cams and GPS installation would make it easier for the government to identify the culprit and track the vehicles.
The second clause insists on providing the identity and photographs of driver, conductor and helper of every carriage to the state transport authority or regional transport authority before seeking permit.
The police report regarding their antecedents and character before their engagement would also have to be intimated in the event of any change of engagement.
