New Delhi: The state government Tuesday asked the Centre to consider opening model colleges in Naxal-infested and backward areas of the state to boost the Gross Enrollment Ratio in these areas. The demands were made Tuesday when the state higher education minister Ananta Das took part in the second day of the 65th Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) in New Delhi where he raised the concern of the state government.
“At the meeting, I demanded the government consider opening five model colleges in Naxal and backward areas of the state with hostel facilities to improve the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in these areas,” Das told reporters after the CABE meeting which was chaired by Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.
During the second day of the meeting, the CABE took resolution to make efforts to increase the GER in states by opening new universities, colleges using infrastructure more productively and using Open Distance Learning and online education.
In the meeting, it was decided that the state would not prepare a ‘perspective plan’ to ensure the GER is escalated in states to weed out regional disparities.
Post meeting, Javadekar told media that the government has decided to regulate online courses and is planning to come up with a fresh set of guidelines to do away with the online courses of non-deserving colleges and boost the system through courses from qualified and permitted educational institutions.
The CABE meeting was attended by 19 ministers, representatives from 28 states and UTs. The meeting Tuesday was also attended by Union minister of culture mahesh Sharma and minister of state for HRD Satyapal Singh. PNN
