Washington: A Chinese spy balloon that flew across the US was able to gather intelligence from several sensitive American military sites and transmit it back to Beijing in real-time, despite the Biden administration’s efforts to block it, a media report said Monday.

A suspected Chinese spy balloon said to be the size of three buses, was spotted over the airspace of the United States in late January.

China was able to control the balloon so it could make multiple passes over some of the sites (at times flying figure-eight formations) and transmit the information it collected back to Beijing in real time, NBC News reported, quoting three unnamed officials.

The intelligence China collected was mostly from electronic signals, which can be picked up from weapons systems or include communications from base personnel, rather than images, the officials were quoted as saying in the report.

The three officials said China could have gathered much more intelligence from sensitive sites if not for the Biden administration’s efforts to move around potential targets and obscure the balloon’s ability to pick up their electronic signals by stopping them from broadcasting signals, the report said.

The balloon first entered US airspace from Alaska January 28, according to the Biden administration.

Over the next four days, it was flying over the Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, where the US has some of its nuclear assets.

The development further strained the already tense bilateral ties between the US and China, with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken abruptly postponed his key visit to Beijing in February this year.

The US National Security Council has referred NBC News to the Defence Department for comment.

In its response, Beijing maintained that the balloon was a Chinese “civilian airship” which had deviated from its planned route.

“The airship is from China. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological purposes,” the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement posted on the Chinese foreign ministry’s website.

February 4, the US shot down the balloon off the coast of South Carolina.

“This afternoon, at the direction of President Biden, US fighter aircraft assigned to US Northern Command successfully brought down the high altitude surveillance balloon launched by and belonging to the People’s Republic of China over the water off the coast of South Carolina in US airspace,” Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin had said.

US officials said they tried to reconstruct the balloon from the debris recovered.

Nijjar's killing: British Columbia premier suspects Canada holding back information Toronto: Premier of Canada's British Columbia province David Eby has said that the government is holding back information regarding allegations of foreign interference in Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing. The Liberal leader said that the Public Safety Minister has reached out, saying Ottawa wants to make sure the province has the details it needs to keep its residents safe, "but there has not been good information sharing," news outlet CBC reported. "I've been continually pushing the federal government and related agencies to share information with the province instead of holding about this latest incident," Eby said, adding that everything he knows about Nijjar's killing is "in the public realm". He also called a briefing with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) director "frustrating" as no concrete information was provided. "For a while, I've been at the opinion that there is a gap between the information that Ottawa has... and the ability to communicate that information to provinces where we can actually make a difference in terms of using it to respond to issues on the ground," Eby said in a video posted on CBC News. Eby said addressing a media session in Vancouver on Friday that federal intelligence is needed to protect and address the concerns of diaspora communities in a better manner. In an apparent reference to sharing of evidence related to the allegations, Eby said: "We can only keep British Columbians safe if we work together. We cannot protect diaspora communities, people who have home connections in other parts of the world, from foreign interference if we don't know that it's (foreign interference) happening," Eby told reporters. Speaking on evidence related to the allegations, Harjit Singh Sajjan, the Indo-Canadian Minister of Emergency Preparedness, said this week that it would be "very inappropriate" for him to discuss anything about evidence as a police investigation is underway. "When it comes to the evidence, it's the police that hold the evidence. And they, alone, decide the next actions on this," Sajjan had told CBC Radio. Speaking to the media on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said "credible allegations" related to the potential link between Indian agents and the killing of Nijjar were communicated to New Delhi "weeks ago". "We hope that they engage with us so we can get to the bottom of this very serious matter," the PM added. According to the 2021 Canadian census, nearly 22 per cent of Indians are spread across the British Columbian cities of Vancouver, Surrey, Kelowna, Victoria, etc. IANS Canada, British Columbia, David Eby, Khalistan, Hardeep Singh Nijjar
