Bhubaneswar, Oct 2: An array of activities by many city based institutions were conducted to mark the 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Sunday.
City based organisation Happiness Charitable Educational Trust conducted a free dental checkup for orphans at Dumduma and diabetes examination for elders near Rasulgarh.
“It was very tough to deal with kids between 10 and 15 years of age. We have also lined up a programme KHWAISH-17 in December,” said Sourav, a member of the organisation.
Dentist Dr Shilpi Ranjan Mishra treated 50 children and counseled them about certain precautions to prevent gum and dental diseases at the venue. Besides, Kalinga Signature Diagnostics also did a free diabetes treatment camp.
Meanwhile, hundreds of young volunteers of Bakul Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, came forward to celebrate Daan Utsav that was formerly called the ‘Joy of Giving Week’. The ‘festival of giving’ would conclude October 8.
The volunteers visited different regions of the state—Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jeypore and Baripada—and conducted workshops on storytelling, paintings, dance and theatre.
In Bhubaneswar, these workshops were held at shelter homes DivyaJyoti, Asha Kiran, Pratibha Ashram and Ashreya. The event was coordinated by Pooja Mishra, Lucy Parija and Alok Kumar Swain.
New Delhi based organization Association for Social Service and Rehabilitation of the Aged (SSRA) conducted a cleanliness drive at Kandalei village, which is 25kms away from Bhubaneswar in an attempt to pay tribute to the father of the nation.
The volunteers cleaned surroundings of local schools and streets. Social activist and coordinator of the organisation Susanta Kumar Sahu said, “It was Gandhiji’s mission to make India clean and we, the citizens of the country, need to carry forward his mission.”
Social activist Sripati Acharya and principal of the Dhauli art college Panchanan Samal were present on the occasion.
DAV Public School at Unit-VIII organised a blood donation camp on the occasion and 75 people donated their blood for the noble cause. The school staff also illuminated lamps and paid a floral tribute to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the premises.
