Bhubaneswar, July 12: A visual art exhibition was held in the city, Wednesday. It was organised by Utsha Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Two talented young visual artists— Sonam Chaturvedi and Archana Das—exhibited their artworks at the expo. The artists portrayed the beauty of art using simple objects from the day-to-day lives. “A simple object can be turned into a beautiful artwork. This is exactly what the artist have tried doing here,”said Sandeep Hota, the project manager of UTSHA.
Sonam Chaturvedi a visual artist based out of Baroda. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from Shiv Nadar University Delhi and a Bachelor’s in Visual Arts with specialisation in Sculpture from MS University, Baroda. “I believe in visual poetry and explore the concept of time in my works. My work derives inspiration from my writings and is translated from texts to visual poetry. The writings are daily observations of the surroundings as well as self-observations. I have used various mediums to stage these ideas— videos, sound and immersive environment,” Sonam said.
Sonam uses videos to display the concept of timelessness. She used a mixed media scattered over the grounds to outline her journey via found objects that she had collected along the Mumbai coast. These objects served as event markers of the past. “I have tried to show how humans are sometimes attached to old things in life. These things are part of their early and childhood lives. These things later turn antique. Now, I want to explore the antiqueness of those elements through the technique of print making and new media,” said Archana. Archana explores how in today’s world familiar objects from her childhood have lost their characteristics and purpose and returned back to nature. She uses prints and mixed media to display these ideas.
