Bhubaneswar: Utsha Foundation for Contemporary Art, Bhubaneswar, organised an open art session titled Residency Open Day for a talented young sculptor from Baroda, Awdhesh Tamrakar. Tamrakar has, for over a month, explored the rich cultural heritage of Bhubaneswar. Naturally, he focused his attention on the temples and other architectural structures. Based on his observations, he presented his works titled, Displaced Places, here this week. The focus of his works was on the abandoned and old architectural spaces, their relation to the present day, as well as on the people living around and how they are connected socially and culturally. Awdhesh said his works focused
on memories or traces left behind when something was removed. “My work transforms ordinary domestic objects and architectural space into poetic sculptures that explore the relationship between memories, architecture, and the body, in the private and public realm.” Added he, “The works are based on the observations I made while visiting the old city of Bhubaneswar. I have focused on the temples and other architectural structures in the area. My focus was more on the abandoned and old architectural spaces, their relation to the present day, as well as on the people living around these structures, as to how they are connected socially and culturally.” He’s all praise for the beauty of the architecture in the city. “It is intriguing to see the social engagement and alternative uses of
these spaces, where they are connected with many activities and are providing a platform for communication. At some places, it was difficult to distinguish between the old and new structures, while at a few other places, it seems as if the structures are emerging from the ground. Many such visuals led me to develop this series of work called ‘Displaced Places’. This series includes five works — two sculptures, one photographic installation, one video installation and a set of drawings. Ustha has organised this session, in a series wherein they bring in artists from outside the state and hold a session with them, displaying their works. Last month, they had called in Sonam Chaturvedi and Archana Das who explained to the audience about the art-concept-mixed media installation.
