Nabarangpur: A Class IX girl has allegedly been raped on the premises of a high school in Tentulikhunti block of Nabarangpur district during school hours, police said.
The alleged incident took place August 21 but came to light Friday after police visited the school and began an investigation.
Following a complaint by the girl’s family, Tentulikhu nti police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the alleged perpetrator.
According to the complaint, the girl had left her classroom during school hours to use the toilet.
She allegedly encoun tered an unidentifi ed person in an open area behind the school toilet, where the assault took place.
The accused allegedly threatened her with a knife and warned her against disclosing the incident.
The girl subsequently re turned to the school and in formed a teacher.
School au thorities informed her family and the president of the school management committee.
The school also lodged a complaint at the Kamata police outpost. Additional SP Aditya Sen and Nabarangpur SDPO Krush na Chandra Bhatra visited the school Friday and reviewed the circumstances.
Police are examining CCTV footage, call detail records and mobile phone location data as part of the investigation.
Sub-inspector Binita Tankis of Tentulikhunti police station is investigating the case.
Members of Maa Ghar, in cluding Dr Kadambini Tripathy, and former Zilla Parishad member Nalini Prabha Hial al so visited the school and urged authorities to ensure support and justice for the girl.
