Dhenkanal, Feb 14: A class-X boy in Santhasara under Gondia police limits here committed suicide by consuming poison after he was beaten up by teachers for allegedly commenting against a classmate girl Friday, police said Saturday.
The victim was identified as Shaktiman Nayak, son of Birabar Nayak of the village. He is reported to have taken the extreme step following humiliation meted out to him at the hands of the two teachers in the presence of a sarpanch.
The incident triggered widespread tension in the village as the victim’s relatives held the local sarpanch and two teachers of the school responsible and lodged a complaint to the police in this connection.
As soon as the body arrived from Cuttack family members and villagers began protests when the police arrived at the spot and managed to placate them. Police registered a case and started an investigation.
According to the complaint, Shaktiman was studying in Class X in Santhapur High School. The teachers pulled him up in the morning for making certain remarks about a girl student of his class.
The teachers even called his mother Damayanti Friday and apprised her about her son’s wrongdoings. Shaktiman was again called up to school after his mother returned and was beaten up by the teachers inside a classroom in presence of the local sarpanch.
The boy came back home crying after school and vomited suddenly. His family members rushed him to the Sriramachandrapur Community health centre where his condition did not improve.
Doctors suspected him to have consumed poison and referred him to the district headquarters hospital from where he was again shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He however, died at night while undergoing treatment.
When contacted, district education officer Sipra Nayak feigned ignorance about the development.
