Bhubaneswar: The classes for the first batch of students of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur would commence from July 2016.
A high-level meeting to this effect was held here under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi where skill development and technical education secretary Laxmi Narayan Gupta outlined the issues for discussion.
“The institute will start functioning from coming academic session with about 50 students. The state government is providing all the necessary support for its functioning,” said director of IISER-Bhopal Vinod Kumar Singh, who is also in-charge director of IISER-Berhampur.
Joint secretary of Union ministry of human resources development, Reena Soonal and Ganjam collector Prem Chandra Choudhury attended the meeting on video conferencing mode from New Delhi and Ganjam respectively.
The institute would start functioning at a temporary accommodation of Berhampur ITI. The academic-cum-administrative building of the ITI would be made available for the IISER as its temporary campus, the meeting said.
The chief secretary assured the IISER authorities present in the meeting that all kinds of infrastructure like quality power supply, road connectivity and water supply would be provided to the campus. Works secretary Nalini Kanta Pardhan along with Ganjam collector were asked to expedite the construction of approach road to the institute.
“Around 200 acre of land has been identified at Loudigam for permanent campus of IISER. The location of the site has been appreciated by IISER authorities as it is close to the National Highway and railway station,” said the Ganjam collector. Besides, the Rangeilunda airstrip is only 23 km away from the campus, he added.
Padhi directed the collector to complete demarcation of the land and raise the boundary wall before handing it over to the IISER authorities.
