Bhubaneswar, August 23: IIIT Bhubaneswar conducted its annual convocation Tuesday. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik was the chief guest at the function. He exhorted students to continue the learning process and to strive for the welfare of the society and to empower the disadvantaged.
“The desire to learn more will help you face the challenges of life with a positive attitude,” the CM said.
He reminded the audience that India has become the world’s largest outsourcing destination for the IT industry and that it accounts for about 67 per cent of the $124 billion to $130 billion market in the US. “The industry employs about 10 million people. Increased penetration of internet, especially through mobile phone, has created new channels for providing services to people,” the CM said.
According to the chief minister, the IT industry had led the economic transformation of the country and altered how the world perceives India against the backdrop of the global economy. “There is huge potential for you IT professionals and entrepreneurs,” he reiterated.
Patnaik said Orissa, too, was striving to make the state a preferred destination for IT industries. “The state government has brought out a new ICT Policy and is in the process of framing a progressive start-up policy. The Industrial Policy Resolution 2015 opens a range of opportunities for entrepreneurs and start-ups in various sectors. The state government is setting up a green field electronic manufacturing cluster at Info-valley.
“We have also signed an MoU with TiE Silicon Valley, USA, to attract foreign investment for the ESDM and IT sector. Apart from the existing four STPIs, four more are coming up in the next one year,” he said and added that the government was planning to establish a characterisation laboratory in collaboration with STPI on the IIIT campus.
“It will be the first such laboratory in eastern India which will help entrepreneurs test their semiconductor designs at an affordable cost. Establishment of an electronic systems design and manufacturing incubation centre to promote the start-ups in ESDM sectors has also been approved by the government,” he said. Governor SC Jamir also attended the event.
