Cuttack, March 26: The rise in temperature in the silver city may inconvenience people but for tender coconut sellers, it means good business.
With tender coconuts in high demand during the summer, prices have shot up. Now, a tender coconut is being sold between Rs 20 and Rs 25.
“It is healthy and fresh and is the best way to beat the scorching heat,” says Sambit Mohanty, a resident of Link Road. The number of shops selling fresh tender coconut water has multiplied overnight. “I sell 150 tender coconuts on average daily during summer. This year, I’m selling them at around Rs 25-Rs 30 per apiece,” said Kanhucharan Mohanty, a coconut seller from Mangalabag.
The traders and vendors buy coconuts from places like Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal, as well as from Andhra Pradesh at around Rs 10 per coconut. A roadside vendor can easily earn around Rs 10,000 per month during
summer.
Kalia Mallik, a roadside vendor near Press Chhak said, “Tender coconut has a lot of medicinal value. Doctors have been prescribing it as an energy drink.” He added that generally coconuts are brought by road. “With an increase in transportation costs, prices are going up. So we are forced to charge our customers more,” Kalia added.
But the number of people thronging his roadside stall means nobody is complaining.
