Contractor duped of Rs 25 lakh

Cuttack: A contractor has been duped of Rs 25 lakh by a person who identified himself as an insurance official.
The cybercrime cell of the state Crime Branch has launched an investigation into the cheating case after receiving a complaint in this regard from the victim.
According to the complaint, the contractor, a resident of Gayatri Nagar under Bidanasi police limits, had insured himself with a well-known insurance company. A man claiming to be an official of the company had contacted the contractor over phone in January 2014 and persuaded the latter to purchase another high-return policy.
The caller had also provided an account number to the contractor and asked him to deposit Rs 50,000 at regular intervals. Expecting high return, the contractor started depositing money in the account in February, 2014, says the complaint.
The contractor suspected something was amiss when the person called him again in December, last year and gave him another account to deposit the insurance premiums. The caller had then claimed that they used to accept premiums in different accounts for safety reasons.
The contractor realised he had been duped only when he contacted the insurance company to enquire about the new policy.
“We have launched a probe into the incident and asked the contractor to submit all documents to us,” said an official of the Crime Branch cybercrime cell.
