Bhubaneswar, Sept 27: Oriental Warriors and JSJS AG Colony registered contrasting wins in different matches of the Gati Krushna Memorial football tournament at the Unit-I Boys’ HS Ground here Sunday.
In a Group A match, Warriors blanked City Club 3-0. Mahesh Singh drew first blood in the 34th minute while Rakesh Sahoo doubled the lead three minutes later. After the change of ends, Mahesh got his second goal to script an emphatic win for Warriors.
In a Group B match, JSJS scraped past Mukteswar Sporting 2-1. The first half belonged to JSJS as Suryakanta Nayak (21st) and Suman Sekhar (38th) scored opportunistic goals. Sailesh Mohanty got one back for Mukteswar in the 59th minute.
Monday’s match: Silcon Institute of Technology vs United Brothers.
Footballer dead
Arunkanta Sahoo of Berhampur Police died while playing a match against Natraj Club in a district level football tournament at the Berhampur Stadium in Berhampur, Sunday. Arunkanta, 48, collapsed while going for a tackle. Players on the pitch tried to revive the unconscious Arunkanta, but to no avail. He was taken to the MKCG Medical College, where the doctors declared him brought dead. It is suspected that he succumbed due to a massive heart attack.
Grassroots Centre
The third Grassroots Centre of FAO was inaugurated at the Khannagar Ground in Cuttack, Sunday, under the aegis of Young Utkal and Mangala Club. “In this centre 30 budding footballers will be nurtured regularly by AIFF- trained grassroots coaches,” stated FAO through a press release Sunday.
