Bhubaneswar: The twin city Commissionerate Police has claimed to have cracked the murder case of a roadside eatery owner in Gangapatna area here last month, with the arrest of a 34-year-old man Friday. Addressing media, police commissioner Saumendra Priyadarsi said Mithun Jena, a resident of Gangapatna area in the City, has been taken into custody on charges of attacking Sashmita Behera November 6 evening leading to her death the next day.
According to the police top brass, Mithun killed Sashmita after he was humiliated by the latter in full public view for ordering a plate of chickpea curry. “Mithun had gone to buy curry from the roadside eatery near IIIT Square November 5 morning when he picked up a quarrel with Sashmita following which she was denied for the item in full public view. To teach a lesson to Sashmita, a humiliated Mithun bought a knife the next day and went to the woman’s eatery,” the police commissioner said. After waiting for some time, Mithun found Sashmita alone at the eatery and attacked her with knife before fleeing the scene, he said. “A profusely bleeding Sashmita was rushed to a nearby healthcare facility where she died the next morning, November 7,” the police commissioner said. Sashmita’s brother complained with Chandaka police November 7 evening following which a case (350/23) was registered and a probe began. “Following investigation, we arrested Mithun. The weapon of offence (knife) has been seized,” he said.
