Bhubaneswar, June 24: Taking a serious note of traffic mess in twin cities, the state transport commissioner has directed the municipal commissioners of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to take steps to ensure smooth movement of traffic.
Transport commissioner Chandra Sekhar Kumar has asked the municipal commissioners to crack down on encroachments by vendors at the bus stops on National Highways and other roads and demarcate parking places and designated bus stops for picking up passengers.
“A large number of buses, other passenger vehicles and auto-rickshaws plying between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are found making halts on NH, particularly at Khandagiri, CRP Square, Acharya Vihar, Vani Vihar, Master Canteen, Rasulgarh, Phulnakhara, Gopalpur, Link Road, Sikharpur and other such places in between to pick up and set down passengers thereby creating great disturbance to the commuters and the public,” the transport commissioner said in his letter to the commissioners BMC and CMC.
“No provision has been made by BMC, CMC, NHAI and works department for bus stop or parking place for busses or auto-rickshaws at the above places and other roads to regulate movement of the vehicles,” Kumar said. He has also asked the authorities to take necessary steps for removal of encroachments by vendors on the NH and other bus stops, demarcate parking places and designated bus stops to ensure smooth movement of general public and vehicular traffic.
He also asked the authorities to look into the issue of passengers crossing roads at intermediate places on NH and other roads to catch buses creating traffic hazards.
