Bhubaneswar: The School & Mass Education Department has decided to shut four colleges placed curbs on 23 others offering Plus Two courses for lack of infrastructure or failing to develop it from the 2018-19 academic session.
This is the first such move after Plus Two colleges were brought under the School & Mass Education Department from the Higher Education Department.
As per the decision, the department authorities have taken action against 27 colleges this academic session. While four Plus Two colleges will be closed, 23 other colleges will face admission curbs.
Students have been asked not to go for admission in those colleges enlisted for closure and the restricted ones. The admission process began in the state June 1.
According to reports, the self-financing Rotary College in Bargarh district, Om Herambalaya Residential College at Berhampur in Ganjam district, Shree Valley College in Rourkela and Deogarh Women’s College in Deogarh district have been closed from this academic session.
The colleges that have been restricted from taking admissions included Bidyabharati Residential College in Angul, RJSMS, Shastri Institute of Science & Technology, Satya Sai Science College and Regional Institute of Science & Technology in Balasore district; Saraswato Sishu Bidya Gyan Mandir in Balangir district, Shakti College in Cuttack, Rengalbeda Regional Panchayat College in Deogarh, Krishna International College of Science & Commerce, Ambedkar College and Pratibha Residential College in Berhampur, KBK Times Academy in Kalahandi district, Rama Devi College in Kendrapara, Subash Science College and Nano Science College in Khordha, Sarala Science Residential College and Mangala Residential College in Puri district, Swami Vivekananda Residential College in Rayagada district, Charmal College and Shree Arovinda Institute of Integral Education and Research in Sambalpur district, Kalinga College and Maa Mekkani Women’s College in Sonepur district and Savitri Gopal Panchayat College in Sundergarh district.
Sources said that more than 1500 Plus Two colleges will offer admissions in the 2018-19 academic session, out of which 435 are self-financing colleges.
However, 56 colleges have been given conditional permission to go ahead with the admission process this academic session. Twelve colleges have asked for permission for infrastructure development. The authorities have permitted two colleges to shift their campus.
Earlier, the state government had closed 82 colleges during 2016-17 academic session.
