Berhampur: Sunil Bisoyi, the kingpin of a criminal gang was hurt in an encounter with the police while 13 of its members were arrested here Friday.
Police also seized guns, bullets and five motorbikes from their possession. A case was registered and Sunil was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Most of the accused hailed from Aska Road area here while some of them were from Dhipa Sahi, police said.
Most of them have several cases against their names while some of them have cases of murder, they added.
According to sources, the 13 youths on motorbikes reached the house of Hari Sahu at Badakhemundi Sahi. They tried to extort him and attacked his family after he declined to oblige. They ransacked Hari’s house and threw away his four-year-old daughter, critically injuring her. They threatened him with dire consequences and later headed to the house of Sunil Mishra.
They also attacked Sunil’s family in his absence. Later, they went to Annapurna hotel and attacked the employees with sharp-edged weapons.
On being alerted, police formed three special squads comprising 50 personnel and sealed all entry and exit points of the town. While the police were chasing the criminals, Sunil fired four rounds at the former. The police retaliated and fired two rounds. The bullets pierced through Sunil’s legs.
Sunil was earlier arrested on charge of murdering hardcore criminal Chicken Rabi. However, he was released on bail as he was a minor then. Since then, he has been running a gang and extorting people, the police said at a press meet. PNN
