Cuttack, Jan 15: Three educational institutions of the district have failed to get grants under the University Grant Commission (UGC) as they did not get the approval of National Assessment and Council (NAAC) accreditation.
Ravenshaw University, Shailabala Women’s College and Jatiya Kabi Bira Kishore (JKBK) College are deprived of funds in the form of grants as the colleges have not upgraded their NAAC status.
NAAC is an autonomous body established by UGC to assess institutions of higher education. NAAC accreditation helps colleges get funds under the UGC. However, these institutions have done little to apply for reaccreditation following the expiry of NAAC accreditation.
According to sources, Shailabala college does not have adequate teaching staff to impart quality education to 2, 750 students. Besides, it has only three hostels for which students are being inconvenienced. Moreover, it does not have advanced laboratory, playground and library.
The college has got grade A+ from NAAC. Though the accreditation expired in 2010, the college authorities evinced little interest to seek reaccreditation. College principal Sanjukta Mohapatra said the college is preparing to apply for NAAC reaccreditation.
Same is the case with JKBK College which has 2,500 students. It is not spared of perennial problems of shortage of teaching staff and infrastructure. The college had NAAC accreditation which got expired in 2012. When asked, college principal Bijaylakhmi Satpathy said required documents to get NAAC accreditation has been submitted to UGC. Ravenshaw University has failed to get funds under UGC after NAAC accreditation got expired.
When asked, Ravenshaw University vice-chancellor Prakash Chandra Sadangi said necessary documents have been submitted in June.
