Hatadihi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was moved over death of a person due to an elephant attack in Hadagada range of Keonjhar.
Notably, Khoka Khandei (52), a resident of Kushatikiri, was trampled to death by an elephant while he was out to relieve himself May 7.
The forest department has provided Rs 40,000 to the bereaved family. However, the meagre assistance to the family made Himansu Shekhar Nayak, a resident of Solapeta, upset.
Nayak moved the NHRC, seeking Rs 10 lakh to the bereaved family. He has also sought action against Hadagada ranger Surendra Hembram.
The NHRC has admitted the petition of Nayak.
People living in villages around Hadagada elephant sanctuary were panicked over the growing elephant menace in the area.
The animals keep on moving in the area and often stray into villages, damaging houses, crops and vegetables.
“For the last one month, three elephants including a calf have unleashed a mayhem in the area. We often encounter them, but manage to escape them,” said villagers.
Elephants are allegedly frequenting to Hadagda, Kushatikiri, Chanchalpada, Madhuban, Haradabadi and Baghuasahi. Forest officials warn people against the animals.
Villagers alleged that forest department had not taken any step to ensure safety and free movement of locals.
Students and teachers of Jawahar Navoday Vidyalay at Hadagada were also panicked over elephant movement since the school has no boundary wall. They are concerned about their safety and security.
Ranger Surendra Hembram said all necessary steps are being taken for safety of animals and people in the area.
