London: Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov overpowered Belgium’s David Goffin in straight sets to book a semifinal berth in the ATP Finals at the O2 Arena here. The sixth seed stormed to a 6-0, 6-2 win against World No.7 Goffin in only 74 minutes here Thursday night.
“I think clearly I played a great match today (Thursday),” Dimitrov said. “I think my focus was very good. I started the match well. I was using every opportunity. I took care of all of the balls that I had to. I won the most important points, especially in the first set.”
Goffin, who upset World No.1 Rafael Nadal in his first match, got his first game 48 minutes into the match after being blanked in the first set. But Dimitrov continued to press him, charging the net and winning most of the points.
Goffin will fight for a semifinal berth with Austrian Dominic Thiem in their final group match, Friday. Thiem, the World No.4, collected his first win of the week, beating Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the day’s other match. Carreno-Busta had replaced the injured Rafa Nadal who withdrew from the event after his loss to Goffin.
