Singapore: The Indian shuttlers including Sourabh Verma, bowed out of the Singapore Open badminton tournament after a dismal outing here Thursday.     Verma lost to Vietnam’s Tien Minh Nguyen 21-18, 15-21, 11-21 in 56 minutes in a men’s singles match.  In women’s singles Rituparna Das lost to Yulia Susanto of Indonesia 21-15, 13-21, 16-21 while Ruthvika Shivani lost 8-21, 15-21 to Japanese fifth seed Sayaka Takahashi. In another men’s singles match, Subhankar Dey lost in straight games to Chinese Taipei’s top seed Tien Chen Chou 13-21, 14-21

Indian challenge ends

Chennai: The Indian challenge ended at the WSF-World Junior Squash Championships here Thursday with all the players bowing out. Among those who lost were Veer Chotrani who went down 9-11, 8-11, 6-11 against second seed Mostafa Asal of Egypt, Rahul Baitha beaten 4-11, 4-11, 9-11 by Egyptian Mostafa Montaser. TheThe other home player, Yash Fadte went down to England’s James Wyatt  8-11, 6-11, 11-5, 9-11. In women’s singles top seed Rowan Reda Araby (Egypt) beat local girl Ashita Bhengra 4-11, 8-11, 2-11 while Aishwarya Khubchandani lost to second seed Hania El Hammamy of Egypt 6-11, 5-11, 9-11.

 

EB colts triumph

Barasat (West Bengal): East Bengal showed a lot of character in tough conditions and bounced back from a goal down to pip arch rivals Mohun Bagan on penalties and annex the U-19 IFA Shield here Thursday. Sourav Das put Mohun Bagan ahead in the 47th minute while Dip Saha levelled in the 84th minute and the stalemate prevailed in the extra time before East Bengal sealed the issue 4-2 in the penalty shootout to annex their 29th Shield title.

 

3 medals for wrestlers 

New Delhi: Gold Coast CWG bronze medallist Divya Kakran had to settle for a silver medal after being too defensive in the final against nemesis Meerim Zhumanazarova while Karuna and Reena returned with bronze medals at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championship here Thursday. All five Indian girls in action reached the final round but Sangeet Phogat (59kg) and Shivani Pawar (50kg) lost their bronze medal bouts. Divya was outplayed by the defending champion, losing her final in the 68kg category on technical superiority (0-11). In the 55kg bronze medal bout, Reena comfortably defeated Uzbekistan’s Khodicha Najimova 8-2 to claim a bronze. In the 76kg bronze match, Karuna beat Mongolia’s Oyunbagana Batchuluu 10-0 by technical superiority.
