Jharpokharia: A 35-year-old woman died allegedly after being assaulted by her drunken husband in Mayurbhanj district, police said Monday. The deceased, identified as Bini Munda of Katishol village under Jharpokharia police limits, had been married for about 15 years to Tapan Munda of Ladhanbani village under Jagannathpur police station in neighbouring Jharkhand.
According to reports, the couple had initially led a peaceful married life. However, later on Tapan allegedly started picking quarrels with his wife after consuming liquor. He reportedly returned home Saturday night in an inebriated state and picked a fight with Bini. During the altercation, he allegedly assaulted her brutally.
The following day, Bini left for her parental home in Katishol village along with her two children. After alighting from a vehicle at Jharpokharia, she reportedly vomited blood, prompting her minor son to inform the police. Police rushed to the spot and shifted her to the Shirsia community health centre for treatment, where doctors declared her dead.
Jharpokharia police registered an unnatural death case (7/2026) and sent the body to PRM Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. Sub-Inspector Chandrakant Mohanty, the investigating officer, said further facts would be known after the post-mortem report is received.
