Kesinga: In a horrific incident, a mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a drunken youth and later beaten up brutally on the day of Nuakhai at Jikia village under Kesinga police limits in Kalahandi district Saturday, police said Sunday.
The 45-year-old victim from Sadar police station area was missing from home since August 24 and was roaming aimlessly in villages. Her family members searched for her but in vain.
The woman was found writhing in pain with critical injuries on her face, eyes and private parts following the assault.
She was rescued by police in an unconscious condition at 10.45 pm and admitted to the Kesinga community health centre. The woman was shifted to the district headquarters hospital as her condition deteriorated.
The accused is absconding after the incident. Police started a probe over a complaint lodged by the villagers but are yet to register a case.
The incident occurred when four youths of neighbouring Dumermunda village visited Jikia to consume liquor Saturday. One of the youths, in an inebriated condition, caught the victim and raped her. The accused beat her up when she raised an alarm.
By the time the village youths rushed to the spot, the accused had already fled the scene leaving behind his bicycle. The villagers caught one of the friends of the accused and gave him a thorough bashing before handing him over to the police. PNN
