Cuttack, Oct 20: Sandeep Patnaik (79, 111b, 6×4, 1×6) hit a patient half century and Kanishk Seth (4/54) scalped four wickets to help East Zone register a convincing 24-run victory over South Zone in a match of the Vinoo Mankad U-19 Inter-Zonal cricket tournament at the DRIEMS Ground here Tuesday.
Opting to bat first, East notched up a challenging total of 271 for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. Apart from Sandeep, the other run-getters were Agniv Pan (54, 74b, 6×4) and Kazi Zunadsaifi (50, 53b, 9×4). Vijay Kumar (4/50) was the best bowler for South.
In reply, South were bowled out for 247 in 49.2 overs. Openers MS Sundar (55, 90b, 1×4) and B Sharath (52, 37b, 7×4, 2×6) gave them a good start, but the middle-order batsmen could not capitalise on it and collapsed against some penetrative bowling by Kanishk.
Brief Scores: East Zone 271 (Sandeep Patnaik 79, Agniv Pan 54; Vijay Kumar 4/50) beat South Zone 247 (MS Sundar 55, B Sharath 52; Kanishk Seth 4/54) by 24 runs.
Seeds sail into quarters
Top seed Chinmay Pradhan and second seed Ansu Kumar Bhuyan entered the quarterfinals after winning their respective matches convincingly at the KIIT courts in Bhubaneswar, Tuesday.
Chinmay prevailed over Yashvardhan Singh of Maharashtra 6-3, 6-4, while Ansu got the better of Mohit Jain of Delhi 6-3, 6-1.
