Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: Workers of a hotel at Master Canteen Square Friday beat up BDA employees when they were on an eviction drive.
Green Chilly eatery boys manhandled driver of an excavator engaged by the eviction squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA).
The severely bruised driver was sent to the Capital Hospital where he was discharged after treatment. An irate mob, allegedly led by the hotel staff pelted stones on the JCB excavator and damaged it, forcing the squad to retreat.
BDA enforcement officer Deba Prasad Dash had a close shave when the junk food kiosk boys tried to manhandle him.
The incident occurred when the city enforcement management committee (CEMC) squad, a panel constituted to clear encroachments from government land, roads and drains, reached Master Canteen and tried to pull down unauthoritised structure of Green Chilly.
As soon as the eatery staff learned about the eviction programme they assembled and threw stones on the excavator.
Before reaching the eatery, the eviction squad had already brought down a temple and a few structures encroaching upon the pavement. The drive is also being carried out to evict encroachers and ensure clutter-free footpath ahead of the Indian Roads Congress to be held in the city.
“One of the kiosk operators caught my arm to harm me, but I pulled back my arm and tried to bring the situation under control,” Dash said. An FIR was lodged with Capital police station against unknown persons by BDA.
