Chhatrapur/Buguda: A one-day crackdown on cyber fraud in Ganjam district led to the arrest of eight alleged conmen, including two B. Tech students — who are accused of routing more than Rs 9.5 crore through 86 mule bank accounts, police said Sunday.
Suvendu Kumar Patra, superintendent of police, Ganjam, said district police apprehended the suspects during “Operation Cyber Kavach” conducted Saturday, February 21.
Police registered 11 FIRs and issued notices to 11 accused persons as part of the operation.
The arrested cyber fraud suspects were identified as Pintu Das, Baya Das, Rajesh Patra and Saroj Patra of Hinjilicut.
Manoj Swain and Ashwini Kumar Rout of Aska were arrested by Buguda police.
Two engineering students — Biswaranjan Gahana and Subhrajit Barik — were held by the Chamakhandi police station.
Both are natives of areas under the Dhusuri police limits in Bhadrak district.
Gahana is a student of Parala Maharaja Engineering College, while Barik studies at a private engineering college.
Chamakhandi inspector-in-charge Shraddhanjali Subudhi said Gahana and Barik carried out fraudulent transactions worth more than Rs 73 lakh through multiple mule accounts.
The duo allegedly lured young men and women and siphoned off large sums from their bank accounts.
