Jatni, July 11: A 19-year-old engineering student, who was critically injured after falling off a running train Saturday, died because of the alleged negligence of railway authorities here.
The death of Saumyashri Ashirbad Sahu triggered tension at the Khurda Road railway station, with hundreds of passengers resorting to a rail roko agitation. Rail services were also affected with the Puri-Cuttack Satal and Palsa-Paradip DMU trains being stuck at the station for around one-and-a-half hours because of the protest.
Sahu, a resident of Balipahad in Baidyeswar police limits, was a student of a Nayagarh college, sources said. The engineering student, who had boarded the first DMU train of the day, fell off the train near Dhaulimuhan station and was severely injured.
The teen was brought to Khurda Road railway station. However, the ambulance reached the station only about half-an-hour by which time he was declared dead by a doctor at the station.
The agitating passengers demanded an inquiry into the matter. The agitators called off the strike after the officials of railway police held talks with them.
A case of unnatural death has been registered in this regard.
