Berhampur: Hundreds of eunuchs ransacked the Golanthara police station before assaulting two constables alleging police atrocities on their community in Ganjam district.
They staged a demonstration on the main road throwing traffic out of gear.
The incident occurred when IIC Alok Jena had been to Cuttack as a witness in a case while only four constables and an officer were present in the police station. The eunuchs barged into the police station and damaged all the furniture before assaulting the constables Fakir Mohan and Susant Dalei.
On learning the incident, Gopalpur IIC and Marine police station IIC reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control, but in vain.
However, local residents came to the rescue of the police and managed to pacify the agitators.
Police registered two separate cases and launched an investigation. IIC Jena reached the police station in the evening and warned of stringent action against the accused.
According to police, the eunuchs often created nuisance at an eatery near Kanisi.” One day, the police reached the spot and prevented them from creating nuisance. Enraged over this, they targeted our police officials,” Jena claimed.
On the other hand, the protesters said eunuchs are being termed as looters and often misbehaved with by the police. “The policemen behave with us as if we are criminals,” they said.
An investigation into the incident was launched while no one was arrested. PNN
