Bhubaneswar, March 17: To mark the occasion of Nabakalebar, a seven-day installation workshop is being organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi at its premises.
Taking inspiration from Nabakalebar, the ceremony in which Lord Jagannath sheds his old body to re-emerge in his resplendent glory, around 16 contemporary and traditional artists from Puri and other parts of the state are attending the workshop in which they carve out a piece of installation in a simple and subtle way by using the space and materials of their choice. Whole of the Nabakalebar process will be created through paintings, craftwork, and terracotta work and art works, which will be exhibited on March 20 at Lalit kala Akademi.
A patta chitra artist from Raghurajpur, Madan Mahapatra said, “Though I am a patta chitra artist, here I am using water paint, colours and canvas. In the workshop we are combining the modern form of art with the traditional style. We are painting the entire event of Nabakalebar, where the sequence of events, ranging from the journey to the sacred grove, divine dream in the Mata Mangala mandir, identifying the daru wood with all its ritualistic symbols, worshipping of daru wood, bringing down the wood, carrying the wood in a procession etc are depicted.”
All the participating artists are divided into eight groups; one traditional artist and one contemporary artist are working in each group and are working on a particular theme.
A Sankhakhetra map is also being depicted on the ground by digging out the soil; the map would represent the premises of the Puri temple known as Sankhakhetra.
Rama Hari Jena, ex-secretary of the Lalit Kala Akademi, is the curator of the entire workshop.
