Bhubaneswar: This year, the Bhubaneswar Style Week was all about the shimmer and iridescent make-up. The two-day long fashion extravaganza brought the best of bridal collections to the city. The ramp at a city hotel was dominated with bridal shades and
deep jewel tones like smoky pinks, dazzling reds and metallic bronzes. The bridal collections showcased heavily embellished lehengas in royal blues, eye-catchy reds and oranges and soothing whites. But, it wasn’t only about brides and their lehengas with glinting golden polkas. There was a bit of Ikat love on the show as well. In a maiden show in the city, designer Sujit Meher mesmerized fashionistas at the event with his designs of Ikat. “This was my first exhibition in Orissa and I am really happy with response from the crowd,” he said. When asked about his creation,
he said, “My theme was based on Orissa handloom and textiles. Through my work, I have been trying to bring the Oriya culture in the mainstream of fashion world. So for this show, I combined Maniabandha, Sambalpuri, Ikat, appliqué work of Pipli and created special creations, including a weeding collection.” “Normally Pipli appliqué works are used for home décors, but I designed contemporary apparels with these,” he said. Models showcased around 20 best creations of Sujit. In a rare show, models walked barefoot as the state anthem Vande Utkala Janini was played in the background. “Orissa is land of varied culture. It’s unique in itself. I wanted to present my work in a different manner. Instead of choosing any western or bollywood music, I thought to play our state anthem in the background. The models walked barefoot because it is our culture. During special occasions, women here smear the foot with alta. I tried to maintain and respect our culture,” he added.
Meanwhile, celebrity designer Mumtaz Khan from Bhopal showcased his rare collection—Save Earth. Renowned model-cum-actor Shawar Ali walked the ramp, doning Mumtaz’s eco-friendly collection. He was the showstopper. The event also featured a show on kids collections.
