Nayagarh: Filariasis, a parasitic disease that affects the lymph nodes and lymph vessels is spreading its tentacles in Nayagarh district which is surrounded by hills and forests.
The district has over 7,113 patients suffering from swelling in legs and 1,065 patients afflicted with swelling of their scrotum called hydrocele. Meanwhile, 28 new filariasis patients have been identified in the district who are asymptomatic till now and have not developed any clinical symptoms.
However, they are likely to develop symptoms after some days. The development has sparked concern among the residents and health officials. On being informed, the health officials have geared up to administer medicines to these new patients and help them recover from the disease.
This was stated here by Collector Rabindra Nath Sahu in the presence of chief district medical officer (CDMO) Makarand Behura to mediapersons at a meeting held at the Sadbhavana conference hall of the district Collectorate. Concerned over the development, he said that filaria eradication programme would be launched from February 10 and continue till February 19.
During this drive, ASHAs and trained volunteers will move from door to door and will administer DEC and Albendazole tablets to the family members on the basis of their age. Medicines will be provided free of cost by the state government and will have to be taken orally after food.
Pregnant women, children below two years of age and people ailing for a long time will not be given these tablets. The district administration has set a target to administer the tablets to 9,76,363 patients.
Among the 28 new filariasis patients, seven are from Daspalla NAC and 11 from Daspalla block. On the other hand, three patients are from Nuagadiasahi community health centre (CHC) one under Sarankul CHC, two under Odagaon CHC, two under Mahipur CHC and two under Nuagaon CHC.
According to information available from the district health department, there are 7,113 patients suffering from swelling in legs in the district. These are 1,452 patients under Badapandusar CHC, 1,029 under Bhapur CHC, 111 under Gania CHC, 160 under Madhyakhanda CHC, 1,878 under Rajsunakhala CHC, 308 under Mahipur CHC, 1,165 under Sarankul CHC and 1,010 patients under Nuagadiasahi CHC.
Similarly, the district has 1,065 patients suffering from hydrocele. They are 131 patients under Badapandusar CHC, 91 under Bhapur CHC, 39 under Gania CHC, 71 under Madhyakhanda CHC, 238 under Rajsunakhala CHC, 152 under Mahipur CHC, 245 under Sarankul CHC and 98 under Nuagadiasahi CHC.
