Sambalpur, Nov 24: Students should emulate the spirit of selfless sacrifice exemplified by Veer Surendra Sai who attained martyrdom in the country’s freedom struggle, Governor SC Jamir told students of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) while presiding over its seventh convocation ceremony here Tuesday.
“Veer Surendra Sai was a great revolutionary and a son of the soil. His role in the country’s freedom struggle is too great to be expressed in words,” Governor Jamir, who is also Chancellor of the university, added.
Speaking of the technology boom in the country, Jamir said it has strengthened the nation and asked students to work hard and play a part in improving the quality of technical education so that the country can contribute significantly in the global fight against environmental pollution and climate change.
Attending the programme as chief guest, Y Venkatramireddy, former vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad, said there are 18,125 colleges/universities in India, highest among all countries. While the country has the third highest student population in the world after China and USA, more than one lakh students pursue their studies in foreign countries, the former JNTU vice-chancellor said, adding that this has resulted in globalisation of higher education and helped in economic growth of Asia. Reddy asked the youths to come forward to use their knowledge on satellite science and information technology towards nation-building.
Many meritorious students – Shubhasmita Nayak and Ananya Srusti Satpathy (mechanical engineering), Amlan Mohanty (electrical engineering ), Rajesh Kumar Sahoo (EE), Mamtarani Panda (MCA), Mitesh Kumar Behera (physics), Mohit Mishra (Prod. Engineering), Kailash Chandra Dash (civil engineering), and Kunal Kumar Panigrahi (CSE) – were felicitated and conferred with gold medals on the occasion.
Among others, VSSUT vice-chancellor E. Saibaba Reddy and registrar PK Pradhan were part of the programme. Others who graced the occasion as guests were collector Balwant Singh, SP Akhileswar Singh and local MLA Raseswari Panigrahi.
