Bhubaneswar, May 29: Weeks of speculation surrounding the possibility of former chief minister and veteran Congressman Giridhar Gamang leaving the party is likely to end as the senior politician is reportedly holding a conference at a city hotel Saturday over the issue.
“This is to inform you that Giridhar Gamang, former chief minister of Orissa, will be holding a press conference at a city hotel at 10.30 am here. The agenda will be given there,” said a release issued by his son Sisir Gamang, suggesting that a major decision is imminent.
Speculation over his resignation from the Congress started doing the rounds after his son Sisir declared that his father was planning to join a national political party shortly.
Sisir added that his father had arrived at a decision to quit the Congress – of which he has been a member for several years – after becoming frustrated with the party’s state leadership.
However, Gamang, a nine-time Lok Sabha MP, chose to keep the rumour mills running by stating that he did not want to make a categorical statement on his future course of action.
“I am now in Congress. How can I speak about the future? I have never said that I will resign from the party,” Gamang told mediapersons here. When asked about his recent meeting with Union minister Jual Oram, Gamang said he met Oram to take up the cause of the Jhodia community.
Gamang later said his son Sisir’s statement was “his personal view”.
