Los Angeles: Game of Thrones franchise is heading to the big screen with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first feature film set in the fictional world of Westeros, which will hit theatres worldwide June 6, 2029.
Owen Harris, who has directed episodes of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon, known for creating the political drama House of Cards and writing for Andor, reported Variety.
Little is known about the plot, but the film is expected to follow Aegon I Targaryen, founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros several centuries before the events of the Game of Thrones series, which ran for eight seasons on HBO and spawned spin-off show A House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon was the first Targaryen king to unite much of Westeros under one ruler and forged the Iron Throne from the weapons of his defeated enemies. His conquest and the early history of the Targaryen dynasty were chronicled in George R R Martin’s Fire & Blood.
The character has never appeared on screen and the actor who will portray him has not been announced.
Based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Game of Thrones ran from 2011 to 2019 and became one of television’s most successful fantasy dramas. The series starred Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, among others.
The Targaryen family has remained central to HBO’s expansion of the franchise’s universe.
House of the Dragon, set about 200 years before the original series, follows the Targaryen civil war and stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.
Its third season aired in 2026 and HBO has renewed the series for a fourth season in 2028.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and set about a century before Game of Thrones. The series, which has been renewed for a second season, follows hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg.
