Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India’s most prominent religious festivals. While Maharashtra is known to host some of the largest Ganesh pujas, the festival — also known as Ganeshotsav there — is celebrated with pomp and show across the country.
The deity is largely worshipped in educational institutions since ‘He’ is revered as the god of wisdom, understanding, and new beginnings. Apart from educational institutions, the deity is worshipped in different institutions of the society.
Significance:
According to the legend, Goddess Parvati crafted Lord Ganesha from sandalwood paste and tasked him with guarding the area while she took a bath. Unaware of this arrangement, Lord Shiva returned and was astonished to discover Lord Ganesha stationed outside Maa Parvati’s bathing chamber. When Ganesha, unaware of Lord Shiva’s identity, prevented him from entering, Lord Shiva became furious and beheaded Ganesha.
Witnessing this act, Parvati became infuriated and assumed the Kaali avatar, threatening to bring about the end of the world. Upon realising the truth, Lord Shiva instructed his followers to find the head of a child whose mother was not looking. They returned with the head of a baby elephant, which was then attached to Ganesha’s body. This is how Lord Ganesha came to be recognised as the deity with an elephant’s head.
