Gangpur eves bag bronze

Bhubaneswar: Aten Topno scored a brace as Hockey Gangpur twice came from behind to secure the bronze medal after beating Sports Authority of India (SAI) 4-2 in the third-fourth place play-off in the VIIIth Hockey India Sub-Junior Women’s National Championship (Div-A) at Hisar in Haryana, Sunday.

Sushmita Panna gave SAI the lead in the 14th minute scoring from a brilliant field goal. Jyoti Chhatri equalised for Gangpur six minutes later before SAI took the lead again in the 25th minute through Dipali. Aten, who has been in a fine form in the tournament made it 2-2 in the 30th minute.

Gangpur came back strongly in the second half with repeated attacks and were duly rewarded as Sunita Xaxa (51st) and Aten (54th) scored two more within three minutes to seal the match. Manisha Oram of Gangpur was adjudged Best Forward of the tournament.

Goals galore

Hockey Gangpur hammered Hockey Maharashtra 18-1 in a match of the VIIIth Men’s Sub-Junior National Hockey Championship at Saifai in Uttar Pradesh, Sunday.

Skipper Sudeep Chirmako (third, 13th, 17th, 18th, 33rd) scored five goals while Amandeep Lakra (sixth, 15th, 40th), Prasanta Lakra (nineth, 49th, 51st) and Deepak Ekka (12th, 25th, 57th) all scored hat-tricks to add to the tally. Ranjit Lakra (29th and 55th) scored two goals while Sumit Kindo (21st) and Amit Kindo (fourth) sounded the board once each. 

Hoopsters lose

Orissa men’s basketball team’s poor form continued as they suffered back-to-back defeats in two days in the 68th National Basketball Championship at Chennai. Orissa lost to Kerala 66-84, Sunday whereas they had been defeated by Karnataka 40-78 the previous day.
