Ganjam: Fishermen in this district have opposed the use of ring nets as this method of fishing leads to death of fingerlings.
The rampant use of ring nets has resulted in reduced fish catch for over 15,000 fishermen in eight villages.
This issue came up for discussion at a meeting of the Marine Fishermen’s Association of Ganjam block here recently. Over 50 members attended the meeting and unanimously decided to stop using ring nets while fishing.
It was decided in the meeting to stop use of ring nets in sea water from Sananolia to Siandi and within a 25-km radius from the beach.
Legal action would be initiated against those found fishing with ring nets, members of the association S Musileya, A Gureya, P Ramaya and S Babaji said.
The fishermen, mostly hailing from Badanolia Nuagaon, Sananolia Nuagaon, Gokharkuda, Podampeta, Nuapodampeta, Kalarabadi, Prayagi and Ramlenka villages, expressed concern over the rampant use of ring nets during fishing in sea waters by some local fishermen and trawlers from other states.
