Rome: Georgia Meloni-led government has become the longest-serving Prime Minister in the postwar era of the Italian Republic, surpassing the record earlier held by Silvio Berlusconi.

Giorgia Meloni assumed office as Italy’s first woman Prime Minister October 22, 2022, and her government completed 1,413 days in office.

She also took to X to celebrate the milestone and welcomed it with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility.

“Today our Government becomes the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic. It is a fact that I welcome with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Because stability is not a record to flaunt, but the condition that allows a Nation to plan, decide, honor commitments, and command respect,” Meloni posted on X.

She said that her government in the past four years has worked to increase employment, reduce unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security, manage public finances with seriousness, and restore to Italy weight and credibility on the international stage. She mentioned that results have been there but acknowledged that how many things still remain to be done.

“This stability is not the merit of a single person. It is the result of a united coalition, which has governed for four years with a shared vision and which has chosen to stay together not against someone, but to realize a project for Italy. I do not believe it is a coincidence that, from today, the three longest-serving Governments in republican history are all center-right governments. Stability is built when an alliance shares values, goals, and a vision of the Nation, not when the only reason to stay together is to prevent others from governing,” Meloni wrote on X.

Meloni said that stability exists due to the trust shown by the people of Italy in her in 2022. She stated that her administration has never considered the trust of the people as blank cheque and will never take it for granted. Referring to the elections in Italy set to be held next year, she said that her government will return before the citizens for what work they have done and ideas for the future.

In a post on X, she further wrote, “Next year we will return before the citizens with what we have done, with what remains to be done, and with our idea of the future. And it will once again be up to them to decide whether we deserve to continue this journey. In the meantime, the work goes on.”

Italian PM said that her administration will mark the milestone of longest-serving government of Italy in Bari, where they will talk about what work done by the government and what lies ahead.

On 22 October 2022, Meloni was sworn in as Italy’s PM by President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace. She is the first woman in Italy’s history to hold this position.

She became involved in politics at the age of 15 as a student and youth movement member. At 21, she was elected councillor of the Province of Rome and, at 27, she was elected leader of Azione Giovani, the youth movement of the Alleanza Nazionale party.

At 29, Meloni was elected as a member of parliament for the first time and, during the XV Legislature, she held the role of vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies. She holds the record for being Italy’s youngest-ever minister. She became Italy’s Minister for Youth at the age of 31 in 2008.
