Nabarangpur: A group of 51 Class X girls of Bhatarasiuni SSD High School of this block, run by the SC & ST development, minorities & backward classes welfare department, Tuesday walked about 12 km to reach the collectorate to demand adequate number of teachers for their school.
However, in the absence of the collector, they had to return to the hostel with an assurance from the district welfare officer that a science teacher would be posted at the school soon.
Later, the in-charge headmaster arranged a vehicle for the smooth return of the girls to the school.
According to the students, teaching in the school has been severely hit in the absence of teachers in science, geography and social science departments. The school doesn’t have a permanent headmaster also. As the Class X examination is just six months away, they badly needed the guidance of subject teachers.
As it was becoming difficult for them to understand the lessons taught by other subject teachers, the girls decided to lodge a complaint with the collector over the issue, it was learnt. Despite rain, the students had left the school and walked up to the collectorate without informing any one to get their demand fulfilled.
The girls alleged they discussed the issue with in-charge headmaster Gopal Mishra Monday at a monthly meeting of the school. However, they were not convinced by the assurance of Mishra and block extension officer Subash Chandra Mishra that the issue would be taken up with the district welfare officer.
The students then decided to meet the collector themselves for immediate action in this regard. PNN
