Cuttack, Jan 21: Orissa eves maintained their winning run trouncing Kerala 9-0 in a match of the Girls’ Sub-Junior National Football Championships at the Barabati Stadium, here Thursday. This was Orissa’s second victory on the trot.
Deepa Nayak (four goals including a hat-trick) and Bannya Kabiraj (three goals including a hat-trick) were the star performers of the day for Orissa. The hosts led 3-0 at the breather.
The Orissa eves were a much superior lot and as the match progressed they took complete control over the proceedings. In the second session as the Kerala girls lost steam, the hosts pumped in six goals much to the delight of the motley crowd which was present to enjoy the action.
In other matches played on the day Bihar defeated UP 2-0, Haryana trounced Pondicherry 18-0 and Tamil Nadu were in a goal rush against Himchal Pradesh and won the game 15-0.
Tamanna (six goals) and Anaya (five goals) were the star performers for Haryana. However, NV Sandhya took the cake by scoring 10 goals in the game against Himchal Pradesh.
Nachuni enter semis
Hosts Nachuni entered the semifinals in the kabaddi event of the Sports Festival after edging out IDC Club 35-31 in a closely fought quarterfinal match at Nachuni, Thursday. Winning team’s skipper Jyoti Ranjan put up a splendid performance to score 16 points.
Chess tourney
District Chess Association of Puri will organise the Mina Patra Memorial All Orissa Open Chess Tournament at Puri January 23-24. The tournament carries a prize purse of `50,000.
