Bhubaneswar, August 9: Orissa Khadi and Village Industries Board (OKVIB) has decided to sell tricolour and other items related to the celebrations slated for the Independence Day, made only of khadi, to check the sale of plastic flags, which are already banned by the government.
In order to boost the sales of khadi flags, the department Sunday inaugurated the ‘Tiranga Fair’ near Khadi Board office at Karvel Nagar in the city. Only BIS-marked khadi flags made by the certified khadi centres across the country will be sold at the fair. Till now, only two khadi boards – one at Hubli in Karnataka and the other at Nanded in Maharashtra – have the licenses to make khadi tricolours in the country.
The fair, which will sell a range of products related to the I Day celebrations, has on display products from the Hubli Khadi Board, while other local products from the OKVIB have also been put on display.
The stalls meant for selling these products were inaugurated by Tajeswar Parida, president of the Orissa Khadi and Village Industries Board. He said, “Tricolour is a symbol of struggle undertaken by our ancestors and the dignity of it ought to be respected. In a bid to create awareness in public of the use of genuine Khadi flags and to take on the unregulated sale of plastic flags which have already been banned, we have opened these stalls.”
“There are around 15 verities of flags with price ranging from `600 to `15,000,” said Geetanjali K, who was selling Khadi flags at one of the stalls. “I have come from the Hubli Khadi Board. We have flags made of hand-woven and spun khadi. Besides khadi flags, we are also selling table flags, flag garlands and other things,” he said.
