Strap: International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Research conducted free diagnosis and group therapy sessions for children with delayed speech, hearing problem and cerebral palsy among others
BHUBANESWAR: International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences and Research organised a free diagnosis session for children on its premises in Khandagiri here Thursday.
The session was for children with delayed speech, hearing problem, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism or neurological issues.
Group therapy can be a very important part of a child’s therapeutic intervention and it is recommended for a number of reasons. At times when a child is learning new speech sounds or linguistic concepts, they are typically mastered within the realm of the therapy room first.
In order to generalise the acquired speech reading skill, group therapy is often recommended. The main reason group therapy is recommended is to target pragmatic or ‘social’ language we partake in every day. Successful communication takes mastery of the subtleties of interactive language–i.e., how to appropriately initiate conversation, maintain a topic of conversation and terminate communication.
Many times a child is willing and eager to communicate but he doesn’t understand the ‘rules’ and communication becomes strained and ultimately breaks down. Forging successful friendships and relationships with others can be very difficult for the child who has pragmatic language difficulties.
Sushmit Mishra, Principal, IIRS, emphasised that group therapy helps us to develop language as well as pragmatic skills and fosters a more holistic development of the child. The advantage of group therapy is that parents are involved in the therapy sessions which make both parents and children confident about therapy and outcome.
The members of IIRS combine fun activities like visiting parks and pottery making in group therapy sessions to make it a fun-filled as well as educational activity. The International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences & Research (IIRS&R) became operational December 3, 2006.
