Kesinga: In a callous display of insensitivity, government railway police (GRP) Friday transported the body of a youth, who had died in a train mishap, to a nearby hospital on a bicycle for post-mortem in Kalahandi district.
Police sought the help of a worker who stuffed the youth’s body into a gunny bag and took it to the local community health centre (CHC) by tying the sack to the cycle. The sight of the youth’s body being taken on the bicycle came as a shock to pedestrians.
According to reports, Chaitanya Chhatria (30) of Goudatula village of Patharla panchayat of Kesinga block died late Thursday night after falling off a running train. The incident occurred near Kesinga railway station signal under Sambalpur Railway Division. The station master informed Titilagarh GRP Friday morning and the railway police personnel arrived at the spot to probe the incident. They managed to obtain the phone numbers of the youth’s family members and contacted them asking them to reach the spot.
However, police brought the body to the local CHC before the family members reached Kesinga. Surprisingly, after registering a case of unnatural death, police asked a worker to stuff the body in a sack and take it to CHC tying it to a cycle instead of using an ambulance or a vehicle. It was a terrible sight for onlookers to see a body being shifted to hospital in such a fashion, sources said, adding the youth’s family members arrived at the hospital in the evening to claim the body.
Police said it was not possible for vehicles to reach the spot as track doubling work is underway. Besides, there is no such law in place to use a vehicle for transporting the bodies for post-mortem, police officials added. PNN
