Gurgaon: The wife of Additional District and Sessions Judge Krishan Kant, who was shot at by her husband’s security guard Saturday, has died while their teenager son is “brain dead”, doctors said Sunday.
While the wife, Ritu, 38, died overnight due to excessive bleeding at the Medanta-Medicity Hospital here, her 18-year-old son Dhruv was “brain dead”, a spokesperson for the hospital told newspersons.
Dhruv, who was shot in the head, “is on critical life support and is brain dead,” the official said.
Police sub-inspector Jitender Singh had earlier told reporters the teenager also
succumbed to his injuries
early in the day.
The judge’s wife and son were seriously wounded after being shot from close range by Mahipal Singh, a Haryana police constable hailing from Bhungarka in Mahindargarh who was posted with the judge for nearly two years. The security guard was arrested while trying to flee to Faridabad. He was sacked from the Haryana police Sunday.
The judge was not in the government car when the horrific incident occurred in Sector 49 Saturday.
Ritu suffered two bullet injuries in her chest and died due to excessive loss of blood, senior forensic expert Deepak Mathur told reporters. Medanta said she died at 9.30 pm Saturday.
Mahipal was brought to a Gurgaon court at 1 p.m. which sent him to four-day police custody. Gurgaon police had sought a week’s custody for extensive interrogation of Mahipal to establish the reason why he killed Ritu and shot at Dhruv.
“Mahipal is frequently changing his statements and becomes furious whenever he is questioned. He said he was depressed on account of his family problems,” said a senior police officer who is interrogating him.
Police said the shooting happened around 3.30 pm Saturday. After initial interrogation, police officers said Mahipal had been demanding leave to go home for the past few days but this was not granted. This might have led to him suffering from depression, the officers said.
“The judge also used to scold him often,’’ one of the interrogating officers said. The judge’s wife scolded him inside the car Saturday when they were going to the market, the officer said.
